Science Slam in Kapstadt
The South African German Centre for Development Research and Criminal Justice (www.drd-sa.org)
at the University of the Western Cape, one of only five DAAD African
Excellence Centres in Africa, and the Anton Lubowski Educational Trust (www.alleducationaltrust.org)
cordially invite you to participate in an exciting and mind-boggling
Science Slam, which is going be held on Saturday, 26 November 2011 from
13:00 to 15:00 at The Business Place, Philippi.
The Science
Slam forms part of the first (but annual) siVUKA event, an educational
awareness, information and motivation day, comprising the Science Slam,
motivational key note speeches, the screening of the Dinokeng Scenarios,
an Educational Jamboree as well as a Freshly Ground benefit concert.
One of the most important pillars of the siVUKA event, the Science Slam
is a form of scientific communication and competition, which originated
in Germany and is closely linked to the concept of Poetry Slams. Six
researchers, each coming from various fields and disciplines from
different universities of the Mothercity (Cape Town), present their own
research in a very short, concise, highly accessible, and, most of all,
entertaining way to the audience (high school scholars and
undergraduate students from the Western Cape Township communities).
Above all, those six researchers also compete with each other over the
title of “The Most Inspiring Researcher of the Mother City 2011”. The
overall theme of this year´s Science Slam is ‘Innovation for
Development’.
Objectives of the Science Slam 2011
• To
inform students about the stages and characteristics of
scientic/academic research processes in general and about the
state-of-the art and development-related research currently conducted at
HE institutions in the Western Cape
• To inspire and motivate students to engage in scientific/academic research by highlightening the:
• Intrinsic value of conducting research in general: the researcher´s
excitement/struggle with research in general, what it means/feels like
(personally) to engage in contributing to solutions to real world
developmental problems with the help of scientific/academic
means/approaches
• Extrinsic value of conducting
development-related research: research that furthers/contributes to the
development (poverty reduction, economic growth, human capital and
knowledge formation, technology etc) of South Africa/the Western Cape
Province
